The Project Based Learning Toolkit

In 2016 I was awarded funding as a LEAD Associate at Sheffield Hallam University. Assigned a mentor I developed a project that looked at how technology could be used to enhance effective reflection on learning and as a way to better organise project based learning.

The old saying you can’t eat an elephant whole, can be related to a project. Break it down into bite size chunks and it becomes more manageable. The Project Based Learning Toolkit therefore looks to provide advice for seven stages within a project lifecycle. These begin with the question (problem or challenge) and end with the evaluation.

Below is a brief explanation of the project.

A virtual presentation at #BETT2017 in a 3D Lecture Theatre using @mirradorltd’s ALiS Online #ALiSOnline

This post shares the presentation I gave virtually at #BETT2017. The topic was 'Using social media for learning and teaching'. Below you can view a recording of this presentation and experience the fantastic virtual space it took place in. The interactive talk takes place in a 3D  Lecture Theatre, and was followed by live conversations and networking in a 3D Gallery environment. Here the artifacts on display were individual slides from my presentation.

The sessions in this space can be very interactive, encouraging participants to ask questions using a mic or through text. There is also a feature that allows you to create polls.

A big thanks to Dr Richard Pountney who invited me to present and both Andys from ALiS Online. I'd initially been quite cautious about virtual spaces having had a quite strange and uncomfortable experience in Second Life. However this was totally different. The software is very intuitive and takes you directly to the Lecture Theatre, with the added option of going into the Gallery to talk to participants. I can see this being a great space to help students build confidence presenting to others.

The slides are also available on SlideShare

On Wednesday I have the great pleasure of being a Guest Moderator on #edenchat. Thanks to Steve Wheeler (@timbuckteeth) for the invite.

The chat will take place at 7.00pm GMT on Wednesday 25th January 2017.

The topic I have chosen for discussion is: Blurring boundaries: impact on effective learning spaces.

During this chat we will have the opportunity to discuss if and how the boundaries between social and professional interactions are blurring; what the the implications are in relation to the amount of time time we spend online; and whether this has any affect on our own digital identity, that of our students, and the interconnected relationships that we might share within and across social learning spaces.

How to take part

During the tweetchat I will be posting 6-7 questions to stimulate discussion. These will be posted from my own account @suebecks and retweeted by Steve via @edenconference. The hashtag for the chat is #edenchat.

For those unfamiliar with tweetchats this is what you need to do to take part or simply 'listen in'.

  • Follow @suebecks and @edenconference where you will see the questions posted
  • In Twitter, use the search bar and look for #edenchat. This will bring up all the tweets that include the chat hashtag.
  • Questions will commence with Q1, Q2, Q3 etc.
  • Include A1, A2, A3 etc in response.
